FAQs

Defense Sport Mouthguard Rinse is revolutionary!

There is no other product on the market that can clean a mouth guard quickly when the athlete needs it most during practices and games. Of course, with anything new there are a lot of questions.  Below are a few answers to frequently asked questions.

How do I use Defense Sport?

No, you don't soak your mouth guard in the solution overnight (even though you can) - Defense Sport is meant to be used during play, so just squirt Defense Sport thoroughtly on both sides of the mouth guard, shake off the excess solution, throw it in your mouth and get back to the game or practice.

How often do I use Defense Sport?

Since our solution is alcohol-free, it is safe to use frequently - so rinse your mouth guard as often as you can (especially if you drop it on the ground).  We recommend the 3 Rinse Routine: Rinse 1x before, 1x during, and 1x after games and practices.  This way the athlete is certain to begin with a clean mouth guard, end with one, and maintain the cleanliness throughout play.

Can't I just use mouthwash?

Mouthwash is meant to freshen breath and break down some tartar on tooth enamel - unfortunately this means that it's also powerful enough to break down the polymers that most mouth guards are made of.  Plus, most mouthwash is almost 30% alcohol, which means kids should not be exposed to it (especially not repeatedly)

Why is it so important to clean my mouth guard during play?

The oral cavity naturally has a lot of bacteria living in it that get on the mouth guard during use.  Since most players remove and insert their mouthguard frequently during play, the mouth guard is also exposed to external contaminants from athetes' dirty hands.  Once exposed to the air, bacteria can rapidly grow on the poreous surface of the mouth guard.  Therefore, when a player uses a dirty mouth guard during the game, they are exposing themselves to a wide variety of contaminants which can easily be absorbed into the body.

During play is when bacteria grows the fastest and also when the athlete is exposed to it for the longest periods of time.  See our Research Section for more information.
